Kaveh Askari, RPh, President

Seeing a need in his local community for a stronger ‘hands on’ relationship between the patient, the doctor and the pharmacist, Kevin used his vast experience and resources to create Alegria Specialty Pharmacy. Alegria’s focus on delivering high touch patient service, education, and advocacy mean Caring is our Specialty. Kevin works tirelessly toward developing new, innovative specialty pharmacies to manage chronic conditions such as HIV, hepatitis and chronic pain in order to ensure all stakeholders: patients, physicians, managed care and manufacturers have a platform to battle these conditions.

Before founding Alegria, Mr. Askari  retired from OncoMed Pharmaceutical Services, a company he founded in 2002. OncoMed operates five dispensing pharmacy sites in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic corridor, servicing patients in over 40 states.  The organization developed focused  programs delivering services to over 1,800 hematologists and oncologists, including seven cancer centers of excellence in the greater New York metropolitan market. OncoMed earned an exclusive contract with Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NY and other Cancer care Centers of Excellence sites to provide their infusion needs, Bio-oncology and adjunctive care pharmaceuticals.

During his tenure there, he served as the Founder, President, Managing Partner, Director of Clinical Programs and Supervising Pharmacist. His key responsibilities included clinical, operational, reimbursement, finance, regulatory and accreditation compliance for JCAHO and URAC pending certification. In addition, he oversaw the call center HUB operation, recruiting, training and development of all pharmacy operations positions.

As the healthcare environment and landscaped changed, Kevin implemented cost containment clinical initiatives to “manage out the waste” in pharmacy costs and promoted clinical interventions that managed appropriate utilization for the right patient, right dose and “just in time delivery” to meet the managed care goals. As pharmaceutical manufacturers continued to produce new market biological agents all products were introduced with high costs, significant side effects and key contractual data requirements. Kevin’s role was to ensure that the pharmacy operations staff adhered to the rigorous requirements and that the operational workflow mirrored the contractual obligations.

During this time, he was approached by many community based hematologists and Oncologists to provide compounded infusion oncology and infusion pharmaceuticals. He continued to support the oncology community and expanded his service area to include the entire NY Metropolitan marketplace with “just in time” bio-oncology and injectables. His expertise covers the entire spectrum of cancer oncology pharmacy and care management services. He has extensive experience in knowledge in physician infusion site operations.

Kevin holds licenses in over a dozen states. He is an active member of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) HOPA, ACCP and the Long Island Pharmacy Association (LIPA) and works in the community on numerous cancer care advocacy programs. Mr. Askari frequently speaks and advises Hematology and Oncology practice sites on operational, administrative, translational clinical pathways and best practice clinical protocols to maximize efficiency of drug and administrative nursing.

Mr. Askari started his career in bio-oncology pharmacy services as an intern in Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, where he was trained intensively in IV, TPN, and oncology admixture for 3 years. In 1991, he founded and opened his first specialized community pharmacy Manhasset Park Drug, in Manhasset, NY.

Kevin, a native of Iran, was exiled to the United States to escape religious and political persecution. He established residency in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After settling in Minneapolis, Minnesota, establishing his citizenship and seeking higher education opportunities, he attended the University of Minnesota School of Pharmacy and graduated with Honors in 1988 with a B.S. Pharmacy Degree.
